Snowshoe At Sunset
We buckle into them
To ease us over the snow
Drifted from winds
From past storms
Our steps crunch through the silence
With nothing but our breathing to keep it company
Footprints, not ours
But those of a lone coyote
Looking for its dinner
The rabbits proved elusive that night
As the sun sets, the sky clears
As the first star signals our return to the barn
Our shoes for snow leaned against the side of the barn
To await another sunset walk
Another winter day
We buckle into them
To ease us over the snow
Drifted from winds
From past storms
Our steps crunch through the silence
With nothing but our breathing to keep it company
Footprints, not ours
But those of a lone coyote
Looking for its dinner
The rabbits proved elusive that night
As the sun sets, the sky clears
As the first star signals our return to the barn
Our shoes for snow leaned against the side of the barn
To await another sunset walk
Another winter day
